Our guest bathroom appeared to have sprung a leak from the shower/tub after we had washed our dog and knocked the tub spout around a bit. I completed a repair on it myself (just slipped on a Home Depot spout) as the spout had come off, a bit of water got behind the wall and did some minor damage but it dried up and I figured that was that.
3-4 months later, I noticed water damage in the drywall of the garage, below the bathroom and panicked - my self repair had failed!? I knew this could get nasty and expensive, quick. It goes without saying, that plumbing, like many house repairs, can increase in price as things get torn apart and discovered.
I hit the internet for plumbers and wanted to find a local company, with good reviews and came across mentions of Santa Margarita Plumbing on Reddit and Yelp and liked what I saw. I gave them a ring on a Sunday night and they said they could come out Tuesday, gave me a two hour window and then called again on Tuesday 30 minutes before arrival to confirm someone would be home.
Sergio and Luis arrived right at the beginning of the two hour window, introduced themselves and I pointed out the damage and what my suspicions were about how it came to start leaking. I knew he'd have to cut into the drywall and expected that after discovering things, the cost of repair may or may not increase - which he advised me of up front as well.
They wore booties inside the house on the carpet, which was very much appreciated and were very professional and informative throughout the process.
Working as a team, they got down to business and figured it out quickly. Sergio showed me that there were no leaks from any of the in/out lines when the tub was filling and draining, and then filled the tub up to the overflow-which then began to leak. I knew our roommate was filling the tub up too much, even though when I asked her she said "no." As it turns out, the work that I did on the tub spout was not the cause of the leak, but a dry-rotted and failed overflow drain gasket!
Within 10 minutes, the gasket was replaced and tested and the issue was resolved. They cleaned up the drywall debris thoroughly and that was that.
Tl/DR: I thought I caused a leak, it was our friend/roommate who was overflowing the tub where the overflow drain gasket was leaking - Sergio and Luis were professional, efficient and knowledgeable in diagnosing and addressing the problem quickly.
10/10, I will recommend them and SM Plumbing to anyone.
